SALT for spices
About
Nutmeg farmers are traditionally the motor of the economy in the villages on the Moluccan islands in eastern Indonesia.
However, the dimensions of the market make that the money from spice trade does not reach the farmers and their families in a fair way. Many families still live in poverty with poor access to health care, clean water, schooling etc.
Since 2013, 300 Moluccan farmers have formed a cooperative with the aim to receive a fair trade for fair products. They are in the process of obtaining the Fair Trade label.

The dream of a fair price for Pala (called Palaplan) and other spices goes beyond the farmers' cooperative. The farmer, as a social entrepreneur, is not an isolated individual: he is a member of his family, and his village. A sustainable development of the Moluccan villages needs financial incentives which can be obtained through the Palaplan. In turn, the Palaplan urgently needs the necessary experience and strengths of the communities in which it operates.
The Constellation and TitanE are partners since 2013. We have a shared believe in the capacity of the Moluccan communities to respond to the issues they face. We support these communities on the islands to achieve sustainable development through their own activities. We stimulate communities to discuss their own dreams and to act together to get closer to their dreams, following the SALT process .
The SALT process will ensure that:
The SALT process will ensure that:
- The strength of the local farmers and their communities are optimized in the realization of the Fair Trade Process
- The ownership of the Palaplan, the action and the results remain fully with the Moluccan population
- The Palaplan contributes to the sustainable development of the Moluccan villages
